Kruzenshtern & Parohod

Kruzenshtern & Parohod (Israel):

Igor Krutogolov - b, saw, voc;
Ruslan Gross - cl;
Guy Shechter - dr;
Boris Martzinovsky - acc.

This cheerful company does not like when its music is being pushed into various categories. According to “Kruzenshtern & Parogod” musicians, the band’s music is like its name, one can’t really decipher it.

“Kruzenshtern & Parohod” plays a mixture of klezmer, progressive rock and free jazz. Even a musical piece lasting no longer than three minutes contains a whimsical and unexpected musical stew, dynamically evolving from elegance of waltz and foxtrot, energy of punk rock and free jazz, to playfulness of polka and klezmer. All this leads to new meanings achieved through the sharp and saturated musical themes, which simultaneously construct and de-construct many musical and cultural influences the band has.

The group was founded in 2002 by I. Krutogolov following his meeting with Ruslan Gross and Guy Shechter. Soon enough the trio became a prominent phenomenon on the Israel’s alternative and avant-garde scenes. In 2005, it was joined by accordionist Olga Yelensky, who was replaced by Boris Martzinovsky in summer of 2008.

“Kruzenshtern & Parohod” has collaborated with French group “Vialka”, Ukrainian “…I Drug Moy Gruzovik” among many other musicians. The Quartet has recorded four albums.

Each member of the band is also busy with a variety of Israeli alternative projects.

Composer, musician and producer Igor Krutogolov is a known figure in Israeli and international experimental noise and industrial scenes. He also works with his own “Karate Band”, takes part in “Chaos as Shelter”, “Bastard Noise”, “Agnivolok”, “Tidal”, “Crossfishes”, “NJD” and other projects.

He wrote a soundtrack for the animated film “Wardrobe” by Japanese directors Yamamoto Hiromi and Takayuri Iwasawa and currently works on a soundtrack for a theatre production. He has recorded 9 solo albums.

Before joining “Kruzenshtern & Parohod” Ruslan Gross was the bass player of cult hardcore band “Rabies Caste”. Currently, the clarinettist is a member of Israeli band “6 Happy Players”, works in other projects with local musicians.

Guy Shechter is a widely acknowledged and busy drummer in Israel's rock and experimental music scene. He leads his own acclaimed hard metal duo “Carusella”; has performed, recorded and toured with “ED”, “Monotonix”, “Flying Baby”, “Lietterschpich”, “Superdrive”, “O.B.E.Y”, “Karate Band”, “AKA Jose”, “Narccist”, Jewlia Eisenberg, Peter Himmelman, Yeremi Kaplan, Mikhail Kolovsky, Nikolay Rubanov, and more upcoming performers.

Boris Martzinovsky is a member of one of the line-ups of “Charming Hostess” – the project led by Jewlia Eisenberg, the famed Jewish radical diva from San Francisco, and also plays in “Panic Ensemble”, “The Tropical Orchestra” and other Israeli bands.
