USA Rež. Robert Mugge
Tenor saxophone master Sonny Rollins has been regarded for decades as one of the most important artists in jazz history, and is still considered the greatest living jazz improviser. In 1986, filmmaker Robert Mugge released “Saxophone Colossus” – a 101-minute portrait named after one of Rollins’ most famous albums. The film captures a band performance in New York State and the world orchestral premiere in Tokyo, Japan. It blends contrasts between the chaos of New York and the exoticism of Tokyo. Mugge’s unique and authentic relationship with Rollins shines through, making this one of the most genuine and compelling portraits of a jazz master. This screening also celebrates Sonny Rollins’ 95th anniversary. |
