On 19 October, after a presentation by the guest from the United Kingdom, Kasparas Pocius will offer a lecture This is our music. Free Jazz and Black Politics in the 1960s. The lecturer will take a comprehensive look at the 20th-century avant-garde, linking it not only to historical, social and cultural contexts, but also stressing that the significance of the achievements of individual artists often do not outweigh collectively developed artistic ideas and practices. And those collective practices are often determined by the situation in which the artists find themselves – for example, the formation of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) movement was shaped by African-Americans’ struggles against racism, the post-colonial movements, and the emerging worldview of the global South.

Playwright, translator and teacher Kasparas Pocius holds a PhD in Philosophy. He graduated in History from Vilnius University and has held internships at the universities of Manchester (UK), Kingston (London) and Paris. Since 2012, he has been teaching at the Department of Art History and Theory at Vilnius Academy of Arts, and since 2019 he has served as a literary consultant to Oskaras Koršunovas/Vilnius City Theatre.
