Harriet Tubman are a power trio like no other." - Mitch Myers, Amazon.Com
Harriet Tubman is the Avant/jazz/rock band from Brooklyn, New York. Harriet Tubman formed in 1998 when drummer J.T. Lewis, guitarist Brandon Ross and bassist Melvin Gibbs came together to start a band. Harriet Tubman is named after the heroic American slave who risked her life to escape from Slavery in the racist American South of the 1800's and helped more than 300 others escape to freedom. Deeply inspired by the ideals of freedom, Harriet Tubman's music plumbs the soul's depths for liberated musical expression.
Harriet Tubman's music is an continuation of the process contextual and musical innovation exhibited by such diverse artists as Ornette Coleman, Jimi Hendrix, Derrick May, Art Ensemble of Chicago and Parliment-Funkadelic. Recontextualizing musical technology to create innovative compostional and cultural spaces is an important part of the African-American cultural tradion. Harriet Tubman is part of our contribution to that tradition.
In the 1960's, in the U.S. and abroad, there was a profound and pervasive emergence of an awakening consciousness. A time of change and transition that spoke of the liberation of human beings from the restrictive and dated paradigms that had characterized societal interactions and ways of being. Questions, and challenges, and calls for liberation and freedom at every level of our lives were being posed. Culturally, they grew a movement toward something Greater, something incorruptible, something real, and void of the empty superficiality of meaningless living. Content as liberator. Freedom.
Harriet Tubman's music reflects the essential learnings of that wave of energy that embraced our world in that time: depth, creativity, communication, spirituality, love, individuality, determination, expression, revelation. We feel that our choice to perform Creative Music, has a value and relevance that connects with a re-awakening, a new search for restored meaning that we see and experience wherever and whenever we perform. Our music does not dictate through genre, or demographic, how one "should" relate to it. This has become a rare quality in our global community.
